We are raising $18,000 to host a seven-day practical retreat for veterans with double arm amputations and their loved ones. Thanks to the support of the NGO “Friends of Chervonohrad,” we have already raised $12,000—we’re just a little bit short of making this project a reality.

This isn’t about a vacation

It’s about regaining independence where it has to be rebuilt from scratch.

What kind of retreat is this?

It’s 7 days of intensive practice where participants learn to manage everyday tasks:

— personal hygiene

— getting dressed

— cooking

— using a phone

— organizing daily life

— preparing for independent travel

All skills are practiced in two formats:

👉 with prosthetics

👉 without prosthetics

Work takes place in small groups—up to 5 veterans per session, along with a loved one.

Who works with the participants

Retreat mentor — Oleksandr Tereshchenko, a veteran with over 11 years of experience living a full life after a double arm amputation. This isn’t theory — it’s the sharing of real-life experience “peer-to-peer.”

The second part of the program consists of support groups and psychotherapy led by Maria Martynenko (USA), a licensed psychotherapist with 34 years of experience.

Participants will also receive legal consultations from attorney Olena Sydoruk, who specializes in military law.

Why This Matters

After severe injuries, the hardest part isn’t just physical recovery. The hardest part is learning to live independently again. This retreat offers more than just skills. It restores a sense of control, dignity, and confidence.

Where and how it will take place

The retreat will be held in Zakarpattia (Velyatino village) in a peaceful setting where you can focus on recovery.

Two sessions are planned:

  • May 16, 2026 – May 22, 2026

  • May 23, 2026 – May 29, 2026

Participation is free for veterans. (Travel expenses are at your own expense as an element of responsibility and motivation.)

How the funds will be used

Your contribution will help cover:

— accommodation and meals for participants

— program organization and the work of specialists

— materials and adapted solutions for daily life

— basic retreat supplies

Why you should support this

This is a small-scale project—but one with a profound impact. It’s not about quantity. It’s about the quality of change in the lives of specific people.

And right now, we’re just a little short of making this a reality.
